Blog Post #3 25/09/15
In my blog post this week I wanted to talk about a character in a story I've been writing. When I was creating him, I didn't realize how much I loved his character, and I later decided I wanted him to be an incredible symbol in the story, but not quite enough to be a main character. I took caution in naming him and introducing him and was careful with his vocabulary, making sure it was remarkably diverse to fit his character.
His name is Cain Albright, named after the famous serial killer Charles Albright (better known as the Eyeball Killer), and *SPOILER ALERT**biblical villain Cain.**
When introduced to the story, he is an inmate at Stark Waters Institution of Mental Illness Rehabilitation and Research (SWIMIRR - pronounced "swimmer"), where one of the protagonists conducts harmless research experiments on the patients. She's incredibly intrigued by serial killers and murderers, as well as most people with psychological disorders that lead them to commit crimes. Cain is the first serial killer that she was allowed to work with, and on the very first day she was already captured in his ambiance and amazed by his scorbutic attitude.
"Ah, patient files. The unpublished books of bigoted categorization." ~Cain Albright.
His files state that he has Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD), Schizophrenia, Anxiety, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), and Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED). I will probably write other blog posts about those specific mental illnesses and leave links. A brain like his is brilliantly programmed to collect information, memorize, and plan/think his way through difficult situations or even just plan a murder, leaving incredibly little room for emotion.
The inspiration for his character came from The Joker from The Dark Knight, as well as Tate Langdon from American Horror Story.
Before he was placed in SWIMIRR, he was a brilliant and consistent serial killer known as 'Hell's Knight'. As a child, he took an interest in serial killers. He saw their work as artistic rebellion. He was particularly interested in people like the Eyeball Killer and the Zodiac Killer, whom he would read about in the papers all the time. When his mother stopped getting newspapers because she feared her son's obsession, he would watch movies and channel the thought process of the villain. His favourites included The Joker, The Riddler, He loved seeing Lucifer on Supernatural, Hades, Hannibal, Dexter, Voldemort, and many others.
His signature was to take the victim's heart, and feed it to the animal he felt best fit their personality. He would leave traces of his next victim's blood on the body, but by the time the police were able to get the next victim to protection, he had already killed them. After 13 murders, he finally got caught. He went down the way they all do ; he got cocky. He wanted to watch the faces of the cops as the found the body of the victim who's heart he removed and then chopped them up and put them back together like a puzzle. He waited at the scene and after he saw their reaction, left for the roadside cabin where he was meant to stay for the night. Because he was gone for so long, he had unintentionally given the police time to get to the cabin before him and he was caught. He was in prison for 2 years before he was transferred to SWIMIRR, where we first meet him.
I have only just begun the story and am already loving his character so much. I can assure you as the story progresses there will be many more posts about Cain. For now, a quote to finish us off.
"I kill people I like. Some of them beg for their life. I don't feel sad. I don't feel anything. It's a filthy world we live in, it's a filthy goddamn world and honestly I feel like I'm helping to take them away from the sh*t, and the piss, and the vomit that run through the streets. I'm helping to take them somewhere clean, and kind." ~Tate Langdon, American Horror Story, Season 1 Episode 1
